The Jacaranda tree is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and South America. The tree has been introduced to Australia, New Zealand, India, Fiji and parts of Africa. Pretoria, South Africa, is known as Jacaranda City.

In Oaxaca a major jacaranda planting took place years ago on the road to Ocotlan, home to the late artist Rodolfo Morales.
